 Q. Some people think that universities should use their funds to support social activities for students. Other people think that this money should be used to improve food at university cafeterias instead. Which do you think is better.
 
A. In this era of rapid social and technological changes, it is often said that universities should spend more budget on improving the quality of food at university cafeterias, the place where most of its students and faculties regularly dine. Although I admit this argument is reasonable to some extent, after some reflection, I have come to believe that universities should distribute more funds towards supporting social activities for student body. The rationale behind this belief is that well-developed social activities enable students to acquire strong interpersonal skills. On top of that, students can better adapt to university life by utilizing various social activities.
 
To begin with, social activities at university allow students to develop strong interpersonal skills. Students will be given a lot of opportunities to get to know each other. So they can build a social network which would help them to improve their academic performances. To cite a personal experience, I had a hard time studying my major in freshman year. I was so frustrated that I even thought about dropping out of university. However, one of my closest friends took me to a various social activities, and I could make a lot of friends from participating to those events. They were all kind people and willingly lent their hands for me to improve my academic performances. As a result, my final grade at the end of semester was far higher than the previous year.
 
In addition, students are able to better adapt to campus life with the help of diverse social activities. So, universities can expect lower drop out rate, but better satisfaction from students. This will truly make the school more prestigious. For instance, according to a recent survey by National Education Institution, the school with less drop out percentage tend to rank higher in university ranking. The survey also indicates that the students attending those schools usually have better satisfactory level in campus life.
 
In conclusion, I firmly believe that it is strongly recommended for universities to allocate more financial resources to enhance social activities for students. The truth of this argument becomes clear when we consider that students can have benefits by improving their academic results, and they can successfully adjust to university life.
